Curriculum

Whitney Young introduces a broad spectrum of multi-cultural and developmentally appropriate activities and programs of learning to children who would otherwise miss the exposure. The students are given a chance to experience the beauty of individual achievement within the context of their own learning styles and environment

WYCDC staff work as a team to create a personalized plan to address each child’s unique personality and learning style. Families are key members of the team. Our programs and services are designed to unlock the special potential of each child who enters. We work very hard to ensure that your child's early successes here become the basis for lifelong habits of hope, learning, and optimism throughout your child's life.

Whitney Young Child Development Centers are very special places. In the Centers' thoughtfully designed environments, our hard working staff stimulate your child's imagination and healthy growth.. We work to help our students develop trusting, confident views of the world.

We have eight basic curriculum areas:

Social and Emotional Growth SkillsChildren learning positive self-image , developing the basis for positive life relationships.

 Cognitive Skills

Children learn to work with abstractions, shapes, colors, and letters to develop reading, science and math skills. They also learn to increase attention span and kindergarten readiness.

Gross Motor SkillsChildren learn balance, control and coordination through play, Ballet, karate, specialized physical education, African dance and wonderful long walks.

Fine Motor SkillsChildren learn to use their hands for precise, detailed work, preparing them for writing and other important manual tasks.

Self Help SkillsChildren learn to take care of themselves and to be more independent.

Language Skills Children learn to express thoughts, feelings and needs to others. Students are included in the working out of problems, theirs and others. There is an emphasis on teaching and modeling Standard English in the classroom.

Science and Humanities Children learn about the living world and about other cultures. They develop the self-respect that comes from true discovery.

Music and Arts Children learn about beauty and learning to create beauty in the world. Our students learn to read the music language and develop skills on the piano and guitar.
Parents as members of the team are encouraged to use teachable moments, as they arise, to support that which we are doing at WYCDC.
