Nutritional
Services | | Children
are given healthy, well-balanced meals, including breakfast, lunch and two daily
snacks and dinner (Bayview). This is a federally funded program. Staff and children
eat together family-style. The Nutrition Program has developed a rich variety
of foods and preparation styles so that students can be helped to experiment with
new tastes and textures in food. Also, parents of children from diverse ethnic
groups enrich our standard menus by providing recommendations to the cook and
periodically assisting with the preparation of authentic meals. |

| | CHILREN
WITH ALLERGIES | Whitney Young prepares seperate dishes
for children who may have allergies to the meals served. If your child has food
allergies, you may provide special food if you have a signed doctor's note. Otherwise,
children may not bring food to school.
| | SPECIAL EVENTS / BIRTHDAYS | Since
all student birthday parties are scheduled at snack time, we recommend that parents
provide healthy snack foods instead of cake and ice cream if they wish to give
a classroom party for their child. Children and adults may not eat candy, cookies,
sodas, gum or other high sugar foods at school. Food and drink high in sugar content
are not prepared or served to the children and will not be allowed to be brought
on campus. We encourage and applaud parents' creativity in designing a healthy
party menu using foods and refreshments which are low in sugar, fats, and salt.
Nutrition Program staff are available to help with useful suggestions for creating
tasty, exciting menus which make special events more fun.
